What is an Intimacy Coordinator?

“An Intimacy Coordinator / Director is a choreographer, an advocate for actors, and a liaison between actors and production for scenes that involve nudity/hyper exposed work, simulated sex acts, and intimate physical contact in tv/ film (IC) or live performance (ID).” (IDC).

Much like a Stunt Coordinator or Fight Director, an IC/ID collaborates with the director and creative team to choreograph these scenes in a way that captures the story while prioritizing the emotional safety and well-being of the performers and crew. As department head, they ensure the process remains respectful, safe, and effective from rehearsal to final take.

As an intimacy professional, I champion a human-first approach to storytelling that reshapes outdated, harmful narratives around intimacy. Through seamless interdepartmental communication, I’ll ensure that our time in rehearsals and on set flows efficiently, supporting both creative freedom and on-set efficiency. I embrace a creative-led approach that encourages improvisation and discovery, grounded in clear, context-based boundaries. This collaborative approach creates sustainable, repeatable choreography that not only aligns with the director's vision but also empowers actors to bring genuine, dynamic intimacy to life.
